Boardwalk Bird Sanctuary

On Sunday the 3rd July 2011 my son, Little Birdman, and I spent about 2 hours at the Boardwalk Bird Sanctuary in Pretoria (GPS: 25°47'46.65"S and 28°19'23.28"E). This little spot lies on a stream next to some office parks and eating establishments. If you are looking for a place to introduce someone to birding - this is it! We saw a total of 21 birds in our time at the spot. Here are some scenery shots of the place:

Just next to the spot there is a complex that is rather good looking to put it mildly:

On the way back to the entrance I stopped to teach my son how to do a bit of motion capture at the fountain:

Here is a list of the birds that we saw followed by some pics that we took: Lesser Swamp Warbler, Blacksmith Lapwing, Bronze Mannikin, Cape Turtle-Dove, Cape Wagtail, Cape Weaver, Common Moorhen, Crested Barbet, Egyptian Goose, Hadeda Ibis, Karoo Thrush, Laughing Dove, Mallard, Southern Masked Weaver, Southern Red Bishop, Speckled Dove, Tawny-flanked Prinia, Cape Sparrow, Thick-billed Weaver, Village Weaver and White-bellied Sunbird.

The last sighting was on the way home - stuck in traffic on the N1 just past Centurion - a close up view of the Gautrain!
