We arrived at Groenkloof Nature Reserve (covered in chapter 21 in Birding Gauteng) at 7:20am and spent an hour completing part of one of the basic hikes. My son was not too wild about the prospect of walking over a mountain - so when I saw the Voortrekker Monument as we hiked, we decided to cut our time at Groenkloof short and head off to the monument for some more relaxed birding.
Here are some scenery pics from Groenkloof:
We were not in the reserve long enough to really do justice to the spot, but here is a list of the birds that we saw: Cape Glossy Starling; Cape Robin-Chat; Kurrichane Thrush; Black-headed Oriole; Crested Barbet; Helmeted Guineafowl; Dark-capped Bulbul; Green Wood-Hoopoe; Southern Masked Weaver; Red-chested Cuckoo; Tawny-flanked Prinia; Black-chested Prinia; Hadeda Ibis; Speckled Mousebird; Southern Boubou; African Hoopoe; Diderick Cuckoo; Red-winged Starling; Grey Go-away-bird; Black-collared Barbet; Cape Turtle Dove; African Paradise Flycatcher and White-winged Widowbird.
