In April 2010 my family and I did a week of house sitting in Sabie and it enabled us to do some serious birding in the area. One of our highlights was visiting the Lowveld Botanical Gardens (covered in chapter 94 in Birding Gauteng). This spot is truly breathtaking - the Crocodile River was in flood so the waterfall was amazing and the suspension bridge a lot of fun (although challenging to take photos on when your kids are bouncing around). The bird life was a bit sparse and it is tough going to bird in forests at the best of times. But spotting the Purple-breasted Turaco was a real highlight - it happened as we were leaving. Fortunately I knew it's call otherwise we would have left without seeing it.
