Melville Koppies

Chapter 4 in Birding Gauteng explores the koppies on the edge of the city of Johannesburg. It is close to my home and yet I had only once before visited the reserve for a picnic. Today we decided to take a walk along the koppies and check out the bird life. We arrived around 9:30 so were not expecting too many surprises. In the hour we spent on the rocky trails we saw Lourie, Cape Sparrow, European Bee-eater, Klass's Cuckoo, Pied Crow, Neddicky, Tawny-flanked Prinia, Southern Masked Weaver, Cape Turtle Dove, Hadeda Ibis, Southern Red Bishop, Cape Glossy Starling and Common Myna. Slim pickings for any birder but the views of the city were great despite the smoggy conditions in the swealtering conditions.
