At 4pm on a cold winters afternoon in July 2010 my dad and I decided to cruise the Umgeni River and check out the bird life. I was pleasantly surprised to see the abundance of bird life on the river so close to the city. We drove along the road on the Durban North side of the river and in about 45 minutes saw enough to make the trip from Pinetown to Durban worthwhile - plus it was the first time I had seen Great White Pelican in the wild! Here are some of the pics I took:
An early morning outing to the river would be ideal - with a visit to the mangrove swamps and the bird sanctuary along the river. Next time!
