The Voortrekker Monument birding site is explored in chapter 20 in Birding Gauteng. My son and I arrived at the entrance to the Voortrekker Monument and mentioned that we were there to do birding and paid a reduced fee to enter the property. we explored the gardens and headed towards the old fort. Here are some scenery pics of the Monument and the city of Pretoria from the fort:
Here is a list of the birds that we saw in the hour and a half we spent at the spot: European Bee-eater; Southern Red Bishop; Tawny-flanked Prinia; Dark-capped Bulbul; Red-billed Quelea; Red-winged Starling; Southern Grey-headed Sparrow; Greater Striped Swallow; Lesser Striper Swallow; Red-collared Widowbird; Little Swift; Southern Masked Weaver; Cape Glossy Starling; Diderick Cuckoo; Southern Boubou; Black-shouldered Kite and Common Myna. The following pics have made the cut (one bird is not yet identified - Bird1 - and I suspect it might be a juvenile Fiscal Flycatcher):
We saw a good amount of mammals on the property including Zebra, Bontebok, Impala and Wildebeest.
