7 System to Rule Your World

There is a line from the Lord of the Rings trilogy that I will never forget: “One ring to rule them all!” When it comes to personal productivity, there are 7 systems that will help you take control of and master your life and work. Here are three things worth knowing about productivity systems:

1. Productivity Systems Are Essential

James Clear in Atomic Habits said that we don’t rise to the level of our goals but rather we fall to the level of our systems. In my coaching practice, I work with clients to help them implement systems into their life rather than focusing on hacks that will help them be more efficient. I tend to sidestep the debates about which single system is the ultimate solution – be it Attention, Energy, or Time Management. I agree that systems are the key, but as you will see from Thing #2, the number of systems needed is important…

2. Seven Systems are Needed

I have identified 7 Challenges people face when it comes to being productive (uncertainty, overwhelm, inconsistency, busyness, distraction, frustration, and depletion). The 7 Keys that I have created to address these challenges (Live Your Mission; Manage Your Actions; Build Your Habits; Plan Your Time; Focus Your Mind; Know Your Self; and Renew Your Energy) are driven by 7 Systems that are critical and inter-related that bring about true change in life and work. The Seven Systems are:

(1) The Mission Management System: Helps you keep your mission central, integrating it across your roles through goals and scheduled activities in a weekly planner.

(2) The Action Management System: Helps you know what needs to be done about important aspects of your life and track your Tasks and Projects in a system you trust.

(3) The Habit Management System: Helps you build habits by making them Obvious, Easy, Attractive, and Satisfying, and track them to ensure they become habitual.

(4) The Time Management System: Helps you plan ahead, identify your priorities, and create goals for all areas of your life to turn intentions into reality.

(5) The Attention Management System: Helps you identify and live your passion, train your brain to think like a champion, and limit your distractions.

(6) The Self Management System: Helps you understand and accept who you are and focus on doing what you do best when you are at your best.

(7) The Energy Management System: Helps you generate Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual energy to enable you to live a Productive Life.

3. Coaching Helps Build Systems

The third thing you need to know about systems for productivity is that it is really hard to implement them in your life unless you have someone who can help you get them up and running.
